Revisiting the Mālama Honua wakas

Room 19 has been talking about the special day last week when we went to Pt England beach to see the Mālama Honua wakas.  Some of our learners used Kid Pix to create a drawing of the waka in the estuary.

Thank you Duffy Books!

We are really excited in Room 19 as we received two Duffy books to take home today.   We are learning to read and can't wait to be able to read these books on our own!  Here is some of Room 19 with the books they took home today!

Mālama Honua comes to Manaiakalani

This morning Room 19 enjoyed seeing Mālama Honua at Point England beach.  We had buddies from Year 7/8 to walk with us down to the beach.  We assembled with the rest of Pt England School on the bank.

While we were waiting for the official welcome to start we could see one of the wakas.  We really enjoyed going onto the beach to see the crew.  Later in the day they visited our classroom and we wer able to ask them some questions we had about the wakas.

Alphabet Activities during the kindergarten visit

Once again we welcomed learners from the Pt England Kindergarten to Room 19.  Today we were working on the letter G and we made some great giraffes!

It was great to see the Room 19 learners sharing the equipment as they worked and using the correct colours on their giraffe.

I wonder what we will make next Wednesday when we think about the letter H?

Exploring Patterns at Makerspace

Room 19 had a great session today with Mr Barks at MakerSpace.  As we continue to work on our houses, today the focus was on the roof.  We learnt about making patterns and what makes a pattern and we practiced with sticks making a pattern.  It was great to see our learners working together to make these patterns.

Once we'd created our patterns, it was time to construct our roof.  Some of us found this quite sticky as we used glue to stick it to our house.

We all really enjoyed today's session and our houses are looking great.  Mr Barks decided that Aye Myat and Hannah were his star builders today.  This is their finished roof.

Get, Set ..... Go!

Today was our second session of Get, Set, Go with Andy.  We were learning about catching a ball.  Andy had different size balls for us to practice with and showed us how to have our hands when we catch a ball.  Room 19 and Room 16 really enjoyed the alien game at the beginning of the session and balancing bean bags on parts of our body as we moved around.

Maths with the iPads

Room 19 enjoyed a great maths lesson on Friday with the iPads.  Even our very new learners were able to participate fully with iPad Bingo to help us learn our numbers.  Its great to see the engagement from everyone and how quickly learners are now able to identify numbers.

Room 19 welcomes more learners

Today was an exciting day in Room 19 as we welcomed Aye Myat, Donya and Hannah to Room 19.  We started the day by having a look around our school, including a visit to the Year 5/6 Camp on our fields.   They were lucky enough to join us at our last swimming session and all really enjoyed their first day at Pt England School.  They are looking forward to getting their own book bags at assembly tomorrow morning.

Swimming Fun

For the next two weeks Room 19 is joining with Room 18 and having swimming lessons.  We are really enjoying our time in the water and our instructor Sarah is teaching us some great skills.

We have been using boards to help us with floating on our fronts and backs.  We also use rocket ship arms and our kicking feet to help us get across the pool.

Golfing around for the last time!

Once again we joined Room 16 and our wonderful coach Shannon for our last session of KiwiSport golf.  We enjoyed using the club and practising our golf shots before exploring using a ball with streamers attached to help us with our catching.

We've all really enjoyed golf and will remember these important points when we play mini golf with our whanau:

Feet together
Hands together
Feet pointing towards the ball
